Don't neglect them as a surface lure... I was on the phone when I caught my first pike on one static lure bobbing along in a bit of a chop.... Had em up to low twenty doing it by design now. The tail gently ticks and they can't resist it.
Love the hit!

Had a couple of fish on the old squirrely today. One pike was only marginally longer than the lure itself. :red:
Ps the one with the grub tail going down. A good lure.

That's lucky for you two. You must save a fortune in replacement tails!

What i meant is i get mostly follows on syraight burts, whereas i get hits on the squirrelly ones.so I rarely use syraight ones and do have to replace the tails.but 8 inch grubs are cheap so no harm.

Well, it must be the way I fish 'em as I get the reverse - more follows to squirley and hits to a straight... both have their day, but I rate the straight a lot higher than the nose tickler

I got a couple of new Burts recently to replace some that are broken. I weighted them up and decided to do a blog article for it as I remembered people often struggle with Burts. I don't bother drilling them as I'm lazy, so I just stick some lead on. Works a treat for me.

http://riverpiker.blogspot.co.uk/2014/0 ... burts.html

From there It escalated into some videos. I'm sure between these they will help someone and inspire others to try harder. There's got to be something for everyone I reckon so thought i'd dig up this thread and stick them on for anyone browsing in future.

The trick, if you can call it that, is make them sink nose down. Plenty of ways of achieving that of course. Still my 'go to' reservoir pike lure  Was catching a few zander on them from the resis last year too

I'm catch fish out 20ft plus on heavy jobs, recon they would work deeper and Derek MacDonald lure pro said same. Weigh them heavy work em along the bottom or fish lift and drop

Over 20ft, fishing mid water. Not all reservoir zander live in 60ft of water

Cheers Mark, I thought as much. Just wondered if you were getting them on an unmodified Burt at 6ft or less, which would have surprised me a little!

One I did a few years ago for someone, finely tuned attached to a trace so it took around 15-20 seconds to rise slightly tail first first. the filler on the back is where I milled a pocket into it and dropped a bearing in then a metal plate over then built the hump back up with filler, that gave it a slight unbalance so it rocked on the pause

What a palaver. Are you a carp angler? :laughs:

Drill holes, slip in some shot, bung holes up with hot melt. b******s to how it's tuned, it's a Burt, it'll catch pike.

Thanks for the detailed report Paul, I don't get on to well with the squirrely i have but have stuck a piece of solder wire on, and it just sinks nicely now. I'll see if I can get a few on it
