Hook sizes

Post by Admau1 »

Hi All, would reducing hook size on big lures have any negative affect on hook ups ?

Depends on the lure. Soft baits and thin bodied hardbaits you can downsize on, but wider bodied baits like Mantas need a pretty wide gape hook to be effective.

One Rapala website says 3/0 and another states 2/0 ??
Anyway they seem over large to me ! I was just wandering if changing to say a 1/0 would make a big difference to hook ups ????

Yes!!

I have a very raw recent memory of a (VERY) BIG pike coming off at the side of the boat, quite possibly because I had 1/0s (with the barbs crushed to comply with the fishery rules) on a lure that originally comes fitted with 3/0s...

No they don't. If it was a minnowbait then, yes, but look at the depth of the body.

If you won't listen to me, then listen to Dave who is far more experienced and knowledgeable with regards to lures than I, or do what I did and then change them when it's too late... :pale:

Change them for a lighter gauge black hook of the same size and they don't look anywhere near as big... the standard thick plated hooks do look OTT

The original hooks are a bit heavy duty, i've got the 2/0 eagle claws that Mr. Lumb sells on mine and reckon they're about right.

Bear in mind that one manufacturers hook size can be a size or more different to anothers. The original ssr hooks (vmc's?) may well be 'officially' 3/0's but the 2/0 eagle claws are physically the same size just a bit lighter in the wire.
