Recommendations for 2023 pike seasin

Post by Oldskoolfool »

Pitsters,

Every year I try to add something new to the lure collection in preparation for starting this autumn once the temperature is more reasonable.

Any recommendations for lures old and new to try?

Had a good few fish on the disco trout last year to 17lb10oz. Similar profile to the Miuras mouse. Even fished slowly, it has good action. Comes in a bigger model called disco pike

I shall try another way.

Have you any preference to type of lure or weight range?

Fish with the method you enjoy using the most is my advice, and good luck to you.
As for lures/bait use something really obscure that nobody else is using eg; I took a good fish in the middle of winter freelining buoyant herring on the surface a heavy chop over a deep section of a big pit.

My river, the Hants Avon is probably producing its finest fishing ever and I would be a fool let such an opportunity pass me by. Life is to short to waste a golden opportunity so this season my piking will be taking second place to a winter with the trotting rod.

May I offer up a Sniper made up by Mark Houghton, one of my favorite lures to use for Pike.

It's got a super aggressive wobble, that goes right up your arms on the retrieve.

Lipless crankbaits, as big as you can find. Massively underrated and underused lure for pike. Thank me later

I don't let the cost of a lure put me off buying or using it. Losing the odd lure is an occupational hazard, but unless I'm super lucky, I lose very (very) few to snags. Having said that, if I am fishing known snags or close to them, I use lures like spinnerbaits or depthraiders if trolling, both are pretty good for not getting caught up. The last 'expensive' lure I lost - I chucked a miuras mouse over the side of the boat last year, not realising I hadn't clipped it onto the leader. Ooops as they say :knife:

Just started using Whopper Ploppers from very small up to quite big with success with chub so far in the small sizes.
