Yours still look perfectly serviceable though

WD40 is handy they are always seized from the last winter,a few minutes working them sorts it.

Yup, but only had to use the forceps so far. They’ve got quite a bit of leverage as they don’t have such a long nose. They are these ones if you’re interested: https://www.sportfish.co.uk/cuda-forceps.html

£32 for a set of forceps?

I'll stick with my £5 long nosed pliers. Less painful when I drop them over the side of the boat

I've started using a cheap pair of fishing pliers attached to a cord. Always in the front pouch of my smock coat along with a glove. Works really well 9.5 times out of 10. These are backed up with long handled pliers and side cutters for the odd tricky fish.

Welcome to my world,I have drawers full of them….. literally 10s of 1000s of pounds of shiny stuff.
All paid for by me & engineers wonder why I say no when they ask to borrow them. They ain’t “just a pair of pliers”
Although for fishing I only buy the 3 for a tenner of eBay specials.

I carry a whole bunch of unhooking tools in a roll - as others have said 'just in case'.

I've had these for a couple of seasons and found them excellent for the money. They are what I use probably 90% of the time.


NB. Locking forceps are very handy on rare occasions of deeper hooking, even if they're not what is being used for the actual unhooking.

If two trebles need to be dealt with, clamping forceps onto the first one freed - to keep it under tension and prevent it re-hooking - helps while the second hook is bring released with another tool.

That’s good advice regarding the locking forceps John, never thought of that.

I use my 12” artery forceps to unhook 99% of the time but always carry a set of long nose, long reach pistol grip pliers and cutters for problems.

Have a look at sponge holding forceps, they give you the best of both worlds.

Long nose pliers for lures,10inch needle holders for bait fishing they’re basically short nose forceps a lot better built that any fishing forceps on the market they used to be dirt cheap on eBay but had gone up when I last looked

Forceps curved design to remove hooks from fish.
Pliers to remove hook from you. Just ensure the pliers you buy will cut the hooks you use in one movement and you can use them with one hand.

I still carry the same forceps I bought in the '70's, Maun parallel jaw sidecutters are my pliers, yes they cut hooks and yes I have used them to removed a hook from me.

To avoid many of the unhooking problems associated with trebles why not use circle hooks, you can remove them with your fingers as the hook always lodges in the corner of the mouth or just outside.

Never left a hook in a fish and would hope you never do. Good luck and enjoy your fishing

Alan, I got a pair of those from China of eBay for £5.50 or thereabouts. Plain silver, no logo, no frills but as good as the branded ones.

The SPRO Secure Grip Pike Plier 37cm works well. Usually reach for them before the straight pliers.

Both! Never have enough……just in case tools you don’t ever want to leave hooks in fish and if you are tooled up properly you will never have to.
