It's quite large, but it's an overgrown aquatic slug.

About 5-6 years ago, I caught a couple of small ones about 15-20lbs in a lake in the Cambridge area while carp fishing. I unhooked 'em in the net and released them without having to handle them. An old boy walking back to his swim told me that there was some big ones in there and sure enough, an hour later I hooked something which was unstoppable on carp gear. It had 100+ yards of line out and then swam through or over something and cut me off. Then I saw yer man leaning hard into something on his heavy gear, I walked around and he landed an 80+lb'er. Horrible looking thing, I was glad my one cut me off. If I knew they were in there, I'd never have fished there .

They do provide a fun fight.
They also do provide a massive amount of dissapointment when something big hits your lure and it turns out to not be a big pike .

Yes they pull well, but so does a boat speeding through your lines. But stunning.

Re: A big un
I'd love to catch one , think it's a shame they not in the river systems here tbh .
With the numbers of pike dwindling & being ever harder to catch on my neck of the woods if be more than happy to catch a catfish !!!

And they will help the Biomass because……….
I for one would not want them in our rivers, they are no better than the seals.
Pike eat fish.
Seals eat fish.
Otters eat fish.
EE’s eat fish.
What do Wels eat FISH.
Plenty of lakes have them in our region, definitely worth the sport even if it’s just to watch your mate get farted and s**t on by the dirty slugs

very adaptive predator, and can be quite tricky at times, some will argue that but I know they can be.
and the fight off one, is like hooking a big eel, that's been fed steroids, they don't half go some

Re: A big un
One of my new club waters has some big ones in it, I had one back home at 20lb, fastastic fight, not fished for them since but if one picks up my half herring in the winter I will be well happy, only problem is when they get big I should think that even a good double pike is not safe

Must be something wrong with me then I don't mind if a cat fish or a eel or anything else for that matter picks my bait up , the not knowing is what its all about .

Same with worm baits on that water. When I first tried worm there, my first bite was an 8lb tench, the second an 8lb bream (a tiddler for the water at the time) and then it was a solid conveyor belt of poxy eels every single bite for the next four years. I never did catch anything other than eels on worm after those first two fish
