I started off using Authanic just because someone gave me a spool, I know why now!

After 20 minutes the trace was reminiscent of Kevin Keegan's perm.

I I now us Cannelle Powertress

Not cheap but knots well and is really soft and low memory. I use it for fly and deadbeat traces.

I think I have tried every wire under the sun in the past 20 years of fly fishing for pike :(

I now use what are basically mini jerk bait leaders made of single strand AFW stainless or titanium wire. These are based on As Swiers version but using a snap rather than his cleaver twist lock as I cannot make these in titanium at the wire springs back :)

It is not unusual for me to use one trace for an entire year, so yes, single strand titanium is expensive, but in the long run its incredibly cheap.

I use the 0.19mm stuff that is about 40lb breaking strain. One end has a strong cross-lok link, the other a loop with a small oval solid ring (like the Savage gear jerk leaders).

The reason for using the stiff leaders is that my flies are large and when fished in pulls, act like a glide bait and move from side to side. Normal wire traces tangle too easily.
