Canal Fishing

Post by Alan_dalton »

Taking the kids tomorrow on the grand union tomorrow for the first time, just asking if it's worth the effort. Want the kids to try and catch a Zander. Just after info as to whether it's worth fishing in the day time or is it impossible this time of year if the boat traffic is too busy? Is it a case of first and last light when boat traffic stops.

Depending where you are in the country. Some canals are affected by river flows.
I know the Ouse is only just coming out of strong stream advice for boaters so traffic should be nil or low. Flows last week at Offord were 40 cubic M/S and we don't open for navigation above 20. This is unusual for the time of year and the Waterways team were hoping flows would be low enough for the river to reopen but with all the rain until recently the system is still trying to drop back to more normal levels.
Equally the South West had a number of flood alerts last week following the latest wet weather. It might be worth checking the EA navigations pages for the river you were looking at to see if they are even open to boaters yet.

Went drove to Coventry area in the end, no flow on the canals, no boat traffic to cause problem, looked ok. Also not a single fish or take between 4 of us!

Yes Dave they both loved it, was hard fishing. George caught his PB. He's really got the bug. Next target is a tope for him. Every day he's asking "when can we go sea fishing?"

Cheers Steve, really happy with this boat. Plenty of room and good for sea fishing aswell or big waters. Planning on tope and bass in June. Got another Scottish trip in May then starting the sea fishing.
