Well done John C, I liked your article a lot. Made me wonder about big pike in your stretches though. Do you run into them whilst fishing for Zeds and if not have you any explanation? Has the increase in Zeds resulted in a reduction in pike numbers perhaps? Is the size/type of bait a factor?

I think one some of the reasons why the Severn is such a prolific BIG zander river are also the same reasons as to why the Severn is, by and large, not a BIG pike river. It has always been a good doubles river, but Severn pike over 24 are very rare beasts. Maybe weeks of coloured water suit zander more so than pike.

Interesting article John. My observations lead me to think there is perhaps a narrow gene pool of bigger pike (15+) on the river. Comparing photographs the bigger pike often have very, very similar tail root markings, shape and general appearance. Other rivers with a better track record of BIG pike have the common denominator of a bigger gene pool of spots, ugly ones, drop dead georgious, and shapes and sizes to produce a sprinkling "more" number of outsized fish.

I'd imagine that that senario has broken down a bit since the 2007 floods which allowed fish of all species to transfer lake to river, and also river to lake (Probably some interesting new Zed stillwaters around now too Image). I've had Pike since the floods that are quite different in colouration to fish I used to catch in the 80's/90's - I've viewed these as ex lake fish.
