Kamasan B983 Wide Gape Specialist Hook

Post by AndyLarkins »

To snell or not to snell? Anyone experimented with tying a knot direct to the eye rather than snelling this hook pattern?

Always looking to improve presentation and hook-up rates for specimen Perch whilst using lobworm and prawn as bait, I’ve decided to give this hook pattern a whirl after recommendation (sizes 8,6,4). The only issue is that it has a slightly upturned eye. Being only slightly upturned and having a curved needle point, would it make a difference? I’ve always snelled hooks with an upturned eye (usually for hair-rigged baits), as tying direct to the hook eye levers the shank and point away from the fish on the strike, and then curves into the flesh on hookset. I’m just a little concerned that the light(ish) diameter line (4lb fluorocarbon) could be damaged against the eye closure when snelling this type/size of hook.

Obviously needs a field trial, and possibly overthinking things here, but any thoughts peeps? :study:

I use these a lot when breaming with bigger baits on the Trent in size 8-10's, I use a knotless knot and had no problems (with or without a hair) I tend to use 10lb hook lengths.
why only 4lb line? Ive never found perch to be fussy over tackle.

Hi Kev... quite often I’ll change depths throughout the day when float fishing "twitched lobs" for perch (to ascertain their whereabouts in the water column) and due to the crystal clear water in a particular pit I fish, I try to keep the business end as inconspicuous as possible. I also like to keep my hook-lengths a slightly lighter B/S than the mainline, just in case of breakages.

I've used this hook with light(ish) lines with the simple knotless knot and not had any issues on self hooking rigs, you could eye tie it and use a bit of tube to sort the angles out.

If hooking rather than hair rigging, I use the B980's with either a grinner or tucked blood, dependant on what hook link, straight eyed and straight point is my general choice if I am having to strike instead of lifting into.

If your using genuine 100% flourocarbon like Rio or Seaguar then a snell would certainly acheive a secure connection.
I snell B711s (its a spade end) with those two brands using both 4lb and 5lb and never suffer a break at the knot.

If the slight offset eye is of concern you can always snip it off and using a gas flame and small hammer straighten the shank and produce your own spade end (years back used to make my own circles this way).

Hi Mike

The hook-length material is Shimano Aspire "fluorocarbon" (made in Japan)... no idea if its 100% but It performs perfectly well enough for my requirements.

Ran a few basic tests this morning, both snelled and tied (5 turn grinner direct to eye). Under the slightest amount of pressure to the hook point resulted in pretty much the same dynamics. Under no pressure (bait presentation situation), the difference tying direct to the eye was that it slightly further angled the shank, thereby reducing the gape. This was also evident when applying pressure direct to the bend. All a bit Heath Robinson, but I also carried out a basic failure test; the snelled hook just edged it.

Hi Andy
Try the snell with the line coming up the inside of the hook shank and without passing the line through the hook eye.
If your snell is good you will have trouble sliding the knot up to the base of the eye once its pulled tight.
This is how Ive always done it and have never experienced a problem, even with big game species.

Really like those hooks for chub and roach fishing, perfect for most coarse fish and bulkier baits like lobworms corn etc,ive had carp straighten them out tho lol
