Rudd/Bream hybrid

Post by chrisjdonovan »

Fishing locally last week and started catching what looked like a rudd/bream hybrid. It was bream shaped with bright red fins but what differentiated from a roach/bream hybrid was that it had the mouth of a Rudd.
Has anyone every come across such a species because it`s new to me???

Yeah happens all the time. Rudd, roach, bream, there are hybrids of them quite often, usually more frequent in very small enclosed body of waters.

Nordbeck,
That is an accurate description of where I caught them. Thanks.

They used to be common place in ireland when i was growing up and are a lovely lookin fish.
sadly rare enough now along with the true rudd as roach have taken over and diluted the gene pool.
a lot of big roach and rudd caught here are actually hybrids of the two.... some historical captures could also be hybrids, but i guess we will never truely know

I suppose the fin colour will range depending on the gene pool of the dominant species. The hybrids I caught had red fins and they were a lovely looking fish.
Thanks to all for you input.

They fight well these big hybrids, here's one I had this spring, I believe it's also Rudd/bream?
