10lb 11oz Chub from the Severn

Post by Flipflopjoe »

Angling Times reporting on a new claim for the British Chub record.

10lb 11oz :afraid:

The fella never had any witnesses tho so unlikely it’ll be accepted.
Still a proper Lunker tho !

Saw this on their facebook page yesterday.I'm no chub expert but there's no way that fish is a ten pound chub.Photo shows a fish held at arms length and weighed on digital scales.I know some of the better models are reported as accurate but surely this one has been weighed on inaccurate ones

The weight may have included the net  I've seen some ridiculous weighing practises on some local waters :suspect:

I only seen one photo on Facebook, I’m very weary of trying to “guesstimate” weights of fish from photos, only as I see some of my photos of fish that don’t represent the size of the fish accurately, for better or for worse !

It does say he weighed it In his net at 12lb 2ozbut then deducted 1lb 7oz for the weight of the net.
I suppose only he knows the truth

That is the nature of fishing.

If you catch an unexpectedly huge fish, you just have to weigh it where you are, the best you can, with what you've got. The same applies to taking pictures of the fish.

Whether that is ultimately good enough for the BRFC is up to them. If it turns out the weighing and photographs don't meet the rigourous standards for record status, it means only that, not that perhaps the weight wasn't true or claimed in good faith.

Good luck to the captor, either way.

Impossible to judge its size from that photo. A bit bigger than four pounds, but that's about as far as I'd go at a guess. :laughs:

It doesn’t look particularly long but it does look fat,but I cant stand that type of arms length photo,if it’s a record then it’s big enough without holding it closer to the camera

That fish albeit a nice fish at arms length doesn't look the weight its stated to be.

If I had a specimen size fish of any species I'd be holding it closer to my body which would offer more secure handling, the size could be judged a little better.

Saw this, terrible picture, could be 5 or could be 9 pounds hard to tell, obviously not gonna be a record and I can’t see it being near the claimed weight if I’m being honest.

He's certainly got the "big fingers" there.

Not in the slightest bit convinced that that is a new record fish.

Ben,

Piker66 is a mate of mine, he said it looks about 4lb wet.He is one of those guy's who does not give 'eff all away except to close friends and seldom if ever on a forum. Trust me he has a nice little list of specices behind him. Catfish on the lift method with corn recently was a bycatch.

As for me, it has no weight in the back end at all and no shoulders..5lb top whack, I'm not having a dig at the guy who caught the said leviathan, but it's IMO not the weight that is claimed.

Also I just can’t get my head around a chub swimming in this country pushing 11lb. That’s over 15% bigger than any chub caught before, it’s like someone coming along saying I’ve just caught a five and a half pound roach!

I know what he said Monts and I disagree. I’m not saying anything about Piker66’s angling prowess either, I just know that 4-5lb Chub are very common place on The Ribble and I’ve caught lots of them, I would bet £1000 that fish is significantly larger than 4-5lb.

It must’ve been a decent fish !
In danger of sounding like a proper “wet behind the ears noddy”
Why would anyone claim a 4-5lb fish as an 11lb’er is beyond me ???
If it was 9lb !?! Maybe you’d add a little and inflate the truth (not me, honest Guv’nor!)
But why would you would claim a 4-5lb fish as something more than double !

Looks like his index and middle finger to me?

The fish does look light towards it's back end though. Shame the picture gives no impression of the breadth across its back/shoulders.

No way is it just a run-of-the-mill chub though.

(Yours is a whacker!  ).

Thanks for the link Ben.

The pic shows a big headed fish, spawned out and very very silvery, at first glance I thought Ide but the head shape is wrong.

Big chub do exist and have done so long before they were feeding on signals, remember the Doctors 10.8 fish from the Annan in 1955, the fish Walker saw in Redmire that he reckoned could have eaten a 5lb that was with it or the dead fish he found that measured 27" or the Liddle fish 13.4 from 1972.

He sounds like my next door neighbour who told me last night he had only caught 1 barbel, took him ages to land it and the fight bruised his hand.
He claims it was 27lb, my wife still doesn't believe me that he's a furkin liar.
