Made some this morning after reading this thread and caught a 3lb Chub! Had plenty of bites but I was probably striking too soon and not letting the bites develop.

Just used half a loaf of bread, crusts removed and blitzed. Half a pack of Stilton and a good chunk of strong Cheddar grated and all mashed together with a knob of margarine.
If you are missing bites from winter chub they may be "lippers" and not sucking at the bait, they can be right gits when feeding like this.
What I found was using a smallish hook and bait bait and longish hooklink changed the taps and fast pulls into nice steady pull rounds
Now the fish cant pick at the bait so easily and so have to suck it up, these slight mods transformed my catches on the Great Ouse.

I'll make sure I have a pack of size 10s in my bag next time.
I go the polar opposite, size 2 super specialist with the hook point exposed. 99% of my paste fishing is freelined. I let the current take it where it will until it settles.

I thought I posted about the hook size earlier :shrug: :shrug: mustn't have hit submit :shrug: :shrug:
Size 2 for me too Bob. I form a gob stopper sized ball around the hook then use the flat side of a knife to press a gap between the hook point and cheese so the whole of the gape is exposed.
I'll try that, I just mould the paste around the hook and mess about until the point is exposed. That's why I don't use any fats in it, to minimise the chances of it going hard and to be able to strike through it.

I do like to fish a bait on a hair where possible and so for cheese paste last time out I fitted a boilie screw to the hook baited with a small bard boilie and wrapped that with the paste, worked well.

Soon the cheesepaste season will be over, but I will try the Mike's camembert one.

It is funny to see that one simple trick may become one personal implementation, like punched bread. Personally, I liquidise soft white bread (the blue one from Aldi) to be used in a cage feeder, from which I retain a small amount. I microwave stinky stilton cheese, then I add the bread until I get a paste that remains soft enough to be kept in the fridge.

After this, it's time to leave the kitchen before my wife comes in to complain about the smell.

I put the paste behind a red amo popup which are the most buoyant I have. This is because the popup keeps the paste off the bottom, and if the fish manages to take the paste off the hair, the popup is still there and is always taken later.

Bob, what do you mean by freelining? Do you mean your line has no weight at all?

Yes if conditions (seem to me) allow it to be fished effectively :thumbs:

I've not needed to use the cheese paste yet but will be giving it a dunk once the rivers have resettled.

I've been catching quite well on steak though. Probably the most versatile and user friendly chub bait on the menu. 🙂

i have some mini marshmallows out of date Chris that i'm going to try and catch some chub on, float perfectly and highly visible, cannot see why they won't snaffle them.

Virtually guaranteed on the surface in the summer Stew I'd imagine.

Feed a bit of mashed bread and leger them amongst it like flake and I cant see why they wouldnt work now either. They are greedy beggars.🙂

There's a river near me where you can/could stand on a weir wall and freeline floating crust/flake and watch the chub take it about 20-30m down stream.

I haven't been in years,,,HMMM!

I think steak sorts out the better fish quite well. Until the recent deluges I would happily have fished nothing but.

I've got a cheesepaste swim in mind for the weekend if the wind slows down a bit though.

Proper enjoying my fishing again. I wish I hadn't been so slavish in my pursuit of pike in the past few years.

I have done in the past Bob but I'm just throwing four or five I individual bits out if I feed at all now.

Nice stamp of fish Chris, I have reinvigorated my fishing by different species, the blanks have me mulling on what can i do different next time, usually culminating in a weird or wonderful tactic or subtle change ... i blend more bread now than we eat, as a bait it's use is wide catching and versatile, i don't get sucked into buying the go to baits as promoted....

Funnily enough I sorted a regular supply of bread only the other day Stew. My pal the baker gave me a bin bag full of out of date rolls for mashing and said I could have a regular supply if I needed it.

Probably the most versatile coarse fishing bait known to man! :cool:

Found the lump of cheese paste in the freezer yesterday, took it out and it is proper pongy now!

Didn't put the chub off though

There's no such thing as a cheese paste that's too smelly, the stuff I've used this winter is three years old and stinks so bad that I need longer arms to open the bag just so the stench doesn't reach my nose😂

Danish blue warmed up a little and then knead it adding a bit of liquidised hemp.... thats it,

Cheese paste is something i couldn't use.......can't stand cheese and thats, taste, smell and even touching the stuff.

As per Mike J i like to use pre-made puff pastry from the supermarket and mix with cheese of choice and whatever additives i fancy too including some fishemal base mix etc.

I have a small amount of cheese left over form a Christmas cheese board and will have a go soon and was going to bulk it out with some bread and wondered what it the rough ratio of bread to cheese as I have used other methods previously? Was also thinking of adding some Parmesan and possibly garlic salt.

I use a fairly standard recipe - 500g of shortcrust pastry, 250g extra mature cheddar, 250g Stilton and a few cloves of garlic mashed to a paste. Grate the cheese and mix into the pastry with the garlic until there are no lumps.

Then divide the mix into four or five balls, place in freezer bags and either freeze until needed, or better still, place the freezer bags in a sealed bucket at the start of the autumn and let the paste mature. It’ll stink and develop a crust of mould, but the chub will love it.

Made some yesterday, very blue stilton, grated Parmesan, garlic salt and liquidised bread.
I liquidised 4 slices of crustless bread to a fine crumb, added all the Parmesan and the garlic salt as I didnt have much of either and then slowly added the cheese in broken pieces while blending. After a while it started to clump together and then all of a sudden it balled up into one lump. At 1st it felt to soft but it was warm coz of the friction. A short while later it was about perfect and really hums. Look forward to tying this off the boat tomorrow hopefully a big fish will follow, thanks for the tips!

Worth including a couple of drops of n- buytric acid in the mix. It’s found in rancid butter ( another dairy product) so goes will in cheesepaste. It stinks . The chub love it too.

A quick Google search will show you I’d guess. It’s a carp boilie additive
Personally, I used the nutrabaits. I have ( when I made boilies) total faith in anything nutrabaits.
