Any joy yet, Fergie?

Was reminded by a conversation yesterday with a pal who used to fish a certain Cheshire spate river I still do. Way back in the day, he and his Dad had lots of success with bushy dries so long as they had a red tail. He couldn’t recall the name of the pattern. Ring any bells with anyone?
Hi mate sorry I'd missed this . I've only gave it one go and it was a disaster very high winds and only a suicidal salmon parr caught. Then the weather went straight to heat wave . Its very low just now but I think I will be giving it a bash this week. Probably a weighted nymph through some of the deeper pools.

Well I went up to the river tonight . Its not rained in weeks so I headed to a bit with some deep pools.
It was sunny and it was pretty hard going I had a fewbpulls of the gold head nymphs but didn't hook up. I eventually moved to a shallow area and quickly had some minnow sized dace then the wee perch appeared so time to move.
On the way back to the car I found a stretch with fast shallow water coming into a deeper hole with plenty cover. First cast I had a double hook up a chub and a dace .
After releasing them I put a bigger nymph on the point to see if I could tempt another chub but I only managed another tiny dace.

Ugh - optimum conditions - not. Still, here’s hoping a wee success begats success. I’m waiting for more water and colour in an attempt to disguise my not exactly slick rod-wafting…

I was using 4lb line and it looked like a tow rope.
At least I know where they are now.

I went for a cast yesterday I didn't have much hope as it was brilliant sunshine and the riverboat down. So I fished a different stretch with plenty deep holes.
I actually managed another chub plus 4 dace and a lovely hard fighting wee trout .

I just need to find the bigger chubb

Good stuff. What fly did the chub take? Thinking about the low/clear conditions.

It's a size 12 gold headed nymph with a bit of green foil on its back . I'm not sure of the name . I got them on ebay.
I will have a look.

Nice one Fergie  if you can find some near the surface in the sun, definitely worth a go with a fly on the top

There were fish rising in that sunshine but they looked tiny maybe dace or roach maybe even minnows . I did have a few smaller dace with a size 16 pearly black pennel on the dropper.
