abu ambassadeur 6501S

Post by Andrew »

just had a chance to have a go of this reel after a friend went and bought one.

dont do it. horrible bit of kit not the usual build quality ive seen from the ambassadeur range.

Theres about an inch 'n' a half of play in the anti reverse, the line lay is terrible "high" at the ends of the spool, spool looks very cheaply made and general loose and tacky feel all over.

It screams budget reel at £80! casting break adjustment screw is cheap plastic and doesnt seem to make "that" much of a difference to over-run (cheap gearing?) in that I mean i slackened it right off and still didnt get much over run.

casting feels and sounds like its about to fall apart

save a few extra quid and get a proper one or buy second hand cheaper than the S and still have a far superior reel for the same money or less.

my pal wont like this but I did tell him to get a second hand 5601 C3 :laughs:

Tell him to check the screws holding it together are tight and a wee oil up on bearings an spindle. Might want to take 2 brake blocks out as well, will over run then  that model has 4 looking at the schematics, it's more or less a bog standard 6500 apart from one little extra bit.

Shimano calcutta now there's a reel :laughs:

I mentioned to him about the brake blocks. are you sure its standard 6500 ? it looked and felt nothing like one. I think the S stands for s**t.

Image

the only thing that felt right about it was the drag. the reel as a whole felt like a toy.

Ambassadeur's in the 5000-6000 ranges have been going down hill (quick) since the late 70's. The last one I brought was in the late 90's. Reasonable but not that great a quality. From the look of the latest effort probably Chinese build quality. Problem with the 70's models your lucky to get them in LHW.

The exception to the above is my 10000 which I use for sea fishing. Great quality although I only brought that in the 90's . Might be the same manufacturing process for that model?

Can I plead for a little leniency please. Can we please just warn him this time that he'll be banned for say a month initially if he misbehaves like this again?

My mate returned this reel a while ago after the bearings screwed up. The replacemnt was just as loose and cheap still with the massive play in anti-reverse. Makes jerking and jigging a nightmare.

After only a few weeks bearings went again so it now resides somewhere at the back of the shed probably never to be seen again. He ended up getting a black max.

Btw what is that little bar on the black max that goes across the top that has a wee screw on the side. Thumb rest ?

Isn't this the one that Pure Fishing (US) made and has little or nothing to do with Abu?

Pretty sure it is, everything made on the cheap and nothing is interchangeable with the older abus.

I seen that when I took the spool out. looks nothing like proper abu's, the bearing on the opposite end of the handle side is on the outside of the spool, its this one that broke twice. When the spool is put back in the bearing goes into a recess on the side plate. the outer wall of the bearing ends up pitted and looks to be picking up something from the recess it sits in. makes it really loud too, not the squealing noise you hear when a bearing is dry but a rough/rubbing/grating sound.

this was only being used for light'ish lures too, hardly put through its paces.

yup, pile of s**t. see what im talking about with the anti reverse. totally screws up timing when jiggin, jerkin, tappin etc, in fact its impossible to impart any kind of regular action in a lure.

ill watch his vs vid later. also, vagina steam ? did I really just see that in related videos
