Phil smith... Rainbows end

Post by Ash m »

Any one read it? Is it worth the big price tag it goes for as in good read or just collectors item? Been wanting a copy for years but abit pricey.

Also anyone got a copy they want to part with?

Sold it about 3yrs back for just under or over a ton can't remember really, the Eel and Zander chapters were my favourite, I do think it's well over priced bit like River Piking by John Sidley which I also sold.
Always quietly confident.

The book is OK but not worth a ton just for the read in my opinion.

Not sure ytou would/will "get your money back" as fishing book prices have fallen by as much as 50% with the recession. Not for CVGs though! and that's a new one. Less really is more in this game.

Waiting for Waddle is worth more. Both are low print numbers I think which is why they are in demand.

Not a bad read but by no means are either a classic. Richie McDonalds book sells well to and thats more like a dot to dot book Image

If you struggling to get hold of a particular book, why not get your local library to order it in for you.

Just a thought.

Anyone know what a signed soft copy of the Domesday book would go for, in very good condition?

I've met Phil Smith on the bank and found him to be a nice chap and I follow his blog fairly regularly. However I was a little disappointed with his last book, Targets Set & Achieved, as I found the writing style dry and uninvolving. He's caught lots of great fish of course but I want a bit more from a book, certainly if I was going to pay over £100!

Got the reprint, it's ok it's quite dated now, good chapters on eels and big bream. Some good stuff on zandering in the fens in the early days. Would not liked to have paid the price tag for the first editions though.

Just managed to pick up a 1st edition (1987) issue for £85 + 4quid postage, that's about half of what I've seen this book go for in the past.

Looking forward to Phil's Zedding on the fens back in the day.

Rainbows end was first published in 1987 along with Silver season golden memories by Tony Miles.

They both sold out fairly quickly and the following year Tony printed My way with chub with the same publisher.
Unfortunately the publisher Ironbridge went bust during the printing so far fewer copies than the other two
titles saw the light of day.

If the book is good enough the size of the print run does not always affect if a book becomes valuable.

Terry Lampard printed 2,000 copies of his brilliant book first cast ( brilliant angler as well ) and Mick Gray
3,000 copies of his carp book Merry Olde Dance and these books now sell for around the hundred pounds mark.

Terry was apparently writing a second book at the time of his premature death and this is now at the printers
according to Ringwood tackle ... I'll certainly be getting a copy.

Interesting stuff Steve, my copy of Rainbows End arrived today - great condition and from the little I've read so far, as good as I'd hoped it would be.

I was very disappointed - Phil is a lovely guy but I felt a lot of his catches were down to the amount of time he spent fishing rather than any particular sparks of genius (the monkeys + typewriters = Shakespeare (eventually) principle).

Bought Alan Rawden's book a couple of years or so ago and felt exactly the same about that.

Contrast with a couple of c*rp anglers - Terry Hearn and Dave Lane; I haven't c*rp fished since the early 90s and have no intention of starting again now but their books just make you want to grab your gear and get out there - whatever you are fishing for.
