Royalty Days

Looks an interesting one.
I've ordered and paid for a copy.
LEP are only printing 250 copies . ( Until it sells out of course ... then should imagine they'll print some more !! )
The stuff on the legendary Bill and Sonny Warren should be a fascinating read though. ( the Terry Lampard's of the day ).
Not sure they'll be much on piking though ... rely on Nick Peat's chapter in Ultimate for that though.

If you like the Avon and have not read it, A Brush with the Avon by the late John Searl is one of my all time favourites. Out of print now, but some cracking fish and of course John's artwork. You may pick it up for around £65.00 pound.

Agreed a brush with Avon is a lovely book.
Avon days and Stour ways by Kevin Crozier is a cracking read as well.
As you say both in demand and rightly so

As a boy reading the print off Mr Crabtree and his big Chub the Royalty became the cathedral of my angling world.
I was 60 when I first fished it and to be honest it was very disappointing simply because it was full of anglers like me, all there to drop a line in the waters of the Holy Grail but not really intersted in fishing 'hard'.
In truth it is just a well managed commercial fishery, on the edge of medium sized town, crossed by a very busy road and overlooked by houses and footpaths, with a famous tackle shop just outside the high gates.
For any visitor wanting to fish the Avon the Royalty provides an easy opportunity, but dont be fooled into thinking it is the only section available on a day ticket.

I agree to an extent with what you say Mike, but we have fished the Royalty midweek and had the place to ourselves. It is an iconic water and yes the first few times I did not fish it hard. The walk along the "Cinder Path" sticks in my memory on my first visit. I grew up in East London and as a kid, you read the Angling Times and it's a world away. So when you first visit, it's nostalgia and I like the past.

Apparently there is a book signing event for this book next Saturday at the royalty Rod Museum.
Can't say I'll be bothering ... a 360 mile one day round trip on a freezing January day where the petrol
cost will exceed the cost of the book does not sound appealing.
Just a heads up if anyone on the forum lives locally.

Maybe to you, but to me it is Nirvana. You can literally feel the angling history when you step onto those hallowed banks. Best of all it is not exclusive to the real ale dribbling elitists that frequent sites such as 'Barbel World'. Anybody can fish there, and for entirely reasonable costs. Every specialist angler should pay homage at least once in an angling lifetime.

To see those luminescent fronds of streamer weed dancing evocatively to the river's tune in the Railway pool and watch the ethereal mullet ghost in and out of the sparkling gravel runs is truly a joy in the summer.

Yes I totally agree with that sentiment.
Indeed, if your of a certain age a Royalty visit cannot fail to quicken the pulse as you walk towards the water for the first time.
I fish sections of the Avon frequented by 'famous names' of the barbel world and have found only a couple to have an elitist attitude, but then isn't elitism prevelant in some form in all branches of angling be it chub, pike or even salmon fishing?
Real ale, well the Ringwood Brewery takes draws its water from the Hampshire Avon so drinking the occasional pint of 'Best' not only supports the local ecomomy but to anglers can be compared to imbibing Holy Water (unless of course, you live in Eire
).

Just finished the book Wat, it is a very, very nice read.
The Royalty has been on my bucket list for a long time mate, as are a pretty big bunch of other places. I'm just waiting for my young lad (7) to be old enough to come along and enjoy it with me. I've a feeling that this year will be a great year for both of us to do a bit of travelling around fishing together.
Great book, really enjoyable read! (Number 227 of 350 hardbacks)

Really enjoyed this book..... the Warrens could catch fish !
Never fished the Hampshire Avon before but has made me want to.
Saw Terry Theobald on his facebook page went down to the book launch.
Later in the afternoon he trotted some maggots on the Royalty and snared a 7lb 8oz chub !
Obviously still some monsters in this stretch of the river.
