Budget self take camera

Post by brian harrison »

Hi, looking to replace my canon s3is with something newer. If I am honest I am s**t with a camera
Or it is with me 😂 I have never used it with a bulb release either, maybe that’s where the problem stems from.
I always get shots out of focus, think this because pressing the self timer focuses the camera as soon as button is pressed.
So do I replace it & if so with what? Or do I try it with bulb release to see if things improve massively.
I caught a few p.bs this year & haven’t got any decent shots of them so time to step it up.
Sorry if this has been done to death already.
I would deffo need flip screen & ability to use remote/ IntervalTimer
Cheers
Bri

Probably an older used Canon G series then. Something like this - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/canon ... ku-1665108

Or if your want to splash the cash - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/canon ... ku-1658812

And one of these pedal releases might work better than a bulb release. I have one and it's a lot less hassle.

No.

I've had a look at my S3IS and it doesn't have the socket for a cable release.

Brian have you not considered just using your phone with some form of adjustable holder and one of the apps that allows you to do self takes

I made this little plunger type thing for my bluetooth phone remote, acts the same as a bulb release. Just a sheet of thin ally cut to shape.

You can make the same sort of thing for cable remotes too.....just tape the plastic remote to the plunger and use like a bulb release. Works a treat

I squeeze it between my knees while knelt down mate, more control than using your foot imo (no accidental releases) and doesnt crush the plunger by being heavy footed

I made something similar for a remote release. It smashed the release to bits when I put my foot on it! :laughs: Hence my joy at finding the Rhino Release.

I've found that putting a bulb/pedal under my heel works best. Heel off ground, weight on ball of foot, then a gentle rock back and - click.

That would offer more control that using your toe to activate it  With my joints though, i`d likely topple over or my leg would go into spasm :laughs: :laughs: :laughs:

Most of the apps like the whistle ones use the default camera settings on your phone Brian, which are usually crap. The bluetooth remotes allow you to swtch camera modes etc for the best result

I bought 5 Bluetooth remotes of flea bay for £2.99 each thinking they would be crap and more or less disposable. However the first one is still working fine…… mind you I don’t catch many fish 🤡
