Kayak motor

Post by Carlperkins »

Got a minn Kota of eBay for Β£78 and have been messing with fitting it on the kayak.
Finally got the motor in place and got a friend to sort the electrics.
As soon as they are done I will update.
So far the bits have cost Β£20 and should end up with a variable speed kayak

The electrics are almost complete and the grey box will sit inside a battery box with the control unit by my side, it has variable speed and forward and reverse and off,
Another week should see it on the water, work permitting

Do you think if you had it fixed dead ahead it would be easy to steer just by dipping a paddle blade in the water Carl? Be less complicated than fitting a steering mechanism perhaps?

Not sure
Steerings been a doddle to sort as it has adjustable foot pegs.
Just got to get the right sized caribiners and its sorted.
Used tandem bike break cables and ran a cable outer through the back of the kayak.

Thinking about it, you would be better with a steering set up leaving your hands free especially if trolling. Be interesting to see how it turns out.

Well the test went well
Pushed the kayak along at a fair lick against the flow of the river
It steered well and ran at full chat for 20 mins plus with no issues
Then the acid test
The wife and the dog and me and off we went.
Same as before...... No problems.

Never even broke a sweat

I take it thats a PWN speed controller ?
Which one did you go for or did you m8 custom make that PCB ?
Or is it the usual chinky scooter motor controller?
Been looking at this stuff myself as minn kota 'maximiser' is just the same ie PWN controller , should on paper give something like x4 battery life compared to leaving it stock.

it was a standard minn kota maximiser engine off ebay so it has the minn kota board with the PWN controller from maplins and a 2 way switch for forward and reverse.
it pushes along a treat and used a 65amph yuasa battery that I found at work and never even touched the battery after a good 30mins at full pelt.

very easy to control with the power and the steering

Yes
Except the throttle.
We binned that and used the potentiometer and a 2 way switch for forward and reverse
Works a treat

Ahhh now it makes sense :)
Top tip btw from my experience POTs usually go a bit dodgy after a while (crap and oxidization gets on the wipers) get yourself a can of servisol super 10 ready for when it does.
