Ned rig

Post by Anchor02 »

So with the local rivers properly messed, I am thinking of doing some fishing at the canal. As fishing finesse rigs is not my cup of tea, would appreciate some advice about the ned rig, and especially the best line to be used. I have seen that using a braided line is the go-to,but from what I have read, the worm has to stay on the bottom, so with the braid not sinking very well, would this be an issue? Or going for fluoro line? Any suggestions? Thanks

Thin braid, you wont get the sensitivity with mono.
I've got a couple of small f/s reels spooled with 12kg powerpro & it's fine - in both senses of the word
Originally done for zander on one of the big midlands reservoirs but I've used it on the GUC for dropshot & ned.
You can get lighter & thinner.

Sure you don't want to go after the pike with lure or deadbait? - on the bottom, sink & draw or suspended under a float as nedding bored me to tears.
If you're after the perch more interesting to find them with small lures & then switch to dropshot or neds.
If pike are present then thin wire trace needed - have a look at the Cahira Nitinol (forum sponsor) range.

Any amount of how-tos on youtube, random example:

Not after pike, perch mostly, sadly there is no zander there as the CRT remove the zander every year. Thanks

Just found a spool of 9kg PP in one of my boxes.
Much thinner than the 12kg.
0.15mm which is about the diameter of 5lb (2.5kg-ish) mono.

As above, find I get bored with it very quickly, often opting for a small shad or crank. When I have tried it I’ve used 11lb power pro to a light 8lb titanium trace as there’s pike in my waters. Used the dedicated flat westin ned heads so the floating lures sit up vertically. An ultralight rod, mines 2-10g, coupled with the 11lb powerpro, allows you to feel every little bump on the bottom.

Used only with the smallest lures in my box. Usually 1-2” shads and mepps size 1 spinners. Anything else up to about 6 inch used on 35lb

Thanks for replying , but as far as I am concerned 8lb is too low, when that 1 or 2" lure is going thru the water, there is a damn good chance a pike will take it, we have all caught pike before that have coughed up 1" long fry, but it is up to you in the end...............It reminds me of a conversation I had with a bailiff on one of my pits, cut a long story short he said he use's mono/fluro lure fishing for perch, I said so what happens if a pike takes the lure, he said but I am not fishing for pike.................I really worry for the future of pike fishing

Agree that there is every chance of a pike, the lures im often using are tiny balsa cranks which only take the smallest amount of weight to affect the action. In some cases even the size of the clip has affected the action. Saying that, I have had no pike so far this season on ultra light lures. I bought the 8lb titanium traces from AGM, and after using them for a few months, am not happy with them so will be changing over in the future. Happy with the titanium as a trace material, just not happy with the snap links they use. Also agree on the future of pike fishing. Some of the traces a mate has showed me he’s pulled out of pike the last few weeks are atrocious. I’ve come across my fair share too this season of pike with damage that is obviously caused by poor handling.

for my ned fishing rigs 20lb braid minimum and 20lb trace if pike are present .......but have caught perch on 40lb wire
dont get hung up over wire thickness there only looking at your lure .....dont use 10lb wire pike can bite through it ......

Picked up some of these links in Cornwall in the summer. 10mm long. 20p for size.

They look perfect for what I need. Will definitely look into getting some, as will probably end up making my own titanium leaders for the future so I can alter length and things.

Cheers
