any of you guys fish live baits on the paternoster rig , just wondered whats your preferance on hooking lives in about 8ft of water about 20ft out .....
been lip hooking them most of the time but miss quite a few bites ....just like to say i dont use circle hooks been down that road and no it dont work for me ......so there before you start ..
as above size 4, small perch still take no problem or 6 if I'm specifically targeting perch, might miss the odd one on circles but wouldn't use anything else
If you watch perch feed they are even more biased to swallowing head 1st than pike but the take is often initially from the rear as they chase to fish down, they will then munch on it for a moment to disable it, spit the fish out then take head 1st, sometimes they are so intent on taking head 1st they actually fail in the attack.
Lip hooking is probably the most popular but can lead to deeply hooked fish.
Hooking through the tail tends to be tangle free but the baits can come off more easily.
Allowing for all that hooking through the dorsal root is optimal I think.
The trouble with hooking through the dorsal it can lead to the bait swimming round and round and upside down particularly when fished on a paternoster with a short hooklink which I think puts the perch off.
Varying the manner of hooking greatly varies presentation that will also depend on bait size and species.

My go to rig for perch using small livos is to mount a single size 8 semi barbed treble on single strand ti with the barbed hook through the tail root of the livo and then push a small square piece of elastic band over the barb, so it holds flat against the tail root, which helps retain the livo on the hook, whilst at the same time keeping the barbed hook completely exposed
In my experience tail hooking also lengthens the time the livo stays alive and active. The stiffness of the TI helps massively in avoiding rig tangles.
I’ve always lip hooked small livebaits for perch fishing and although I’ve tried circle hooks, with some success, I still love a Drennan Wide Gape Specialist in a 4 or 6.
Been fishing this way the past 2 weeks and I’m up to 3lb 3oz already with a good chance of a 4lb’er from the water when it finally gets properly cold I think.
